BROOKHAVEN — Rain is not the only weather threat for Saturday. Friday is nice and sunny with blue skies and birds singing tunes but the weather could get a little dark Saturday.

A 70 percent chance of rain is forecast for Lincoln County but the storms rolling in Saturday afternoon are the biggest threat.

NWS Jackson forecasts a slight risk of severe storms could hit Lincoln County and counties to the north and west Saturday afternoon into the night. Storms could produce damaging winds up to 60 mph and golf ball sized hail.

Lawerence County and areas to the south and east are under a marginal risk of severe storms. The storms could produce 60 mph damaging winds and quarter sized hail.

Tornadoes can not be ruled out for Southwest Mississippi. To date, 31 twisters have touched down in Mississippi since Jan. 1 killing 22 people and injuring 22 or more. Little Bahalia, a community northeast of Brookhaven, experienced an EF1 this February during a band of severe storms rolling across the region.

No one was injured in the Little Bahalia tornado but a mobile trailer was destroyed. Another home and carport were also damaged by the tornado. NWS Jackson advises the public to have more than one way to receive information and notifications about storms.

Staying weather aware could be the difference between life and death. We will also provide updates as this storm approaches, during and after the storm passes if there is any damage or power is knocked out.

Sunday is forecast to be sunny again but high winds will remain through Monday. Sustained wind speeds could range from 5 to 15 mph and gusts could reach 20 mph.

Brookhaven has seen 1.91 inches of precipitation in the past 24 hours, 6.73 inches of rain this month and 22.92 inches of rain since Jan. 1.
