Freshman pitcher Dreamus Harron struck out eight and gave up just one earned run in 6.2 innings of action to help push the Panthers past the visitors from Waynesboro in the first game of their MHSAA 5A first round series.

Brookhaven High (18-8) will travel to Wayne County (7-14) for the second game of the series on Friday.

WC led 1-0 and 2-1 before the Panthers tied the game at 2-2 on a bunt by Ben Wilson that scored Walker Moak. The winning run for coach Matt White’s side came when senior Jake Meilstrup hit a sac fly that scored Mason White.

“You stayed the course,” Coach White said to his team following the win. “We pulled together and won. When we are together, we are tough. When we play divided, we aren’t as good.”

If a third and deciding game is needed, it’ll be played in Brookhaven on Saturday.

The winner of the series will move on to play Picayune (13-10) in the second round.

Brookhaven Academy 2,

Central Hinds Academy 1

A single by Matt Newman was the only hit of the night for the Brookhaven Academy (17-12) offense, but it came during a timely inning where the Cougars were able to score two runs and take the lead in their MAIS 5A playoff series opener in Raymond against Central Hinds (9-21).

Newman’s single along with two walks and a balk helped plate the two runs and that’s all that senior southpaw Judson Griffin needed as the Copiah-Lincoln signee struck out 10 in a complete game win.

“It was one of those games where you look at Jud and the game he pitched and you think to yourself, I’m glad this guy is on our team,” said BA head coach Caleb Upton. “I think some of his hardest pitches of the night were in the last inning. You could just see how locked in he was and how bad he wanted it. We call him our fifth-year senior because he’s got so much experience and is such a leader for us.”

The Cougars will host game two on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. If a third and deciding game is needed, it’ll be played immediately after the conclusion of game two.

The winner of the series will move on to play the winner of the Copiah Academy/Columbia Academy series in the second round.

French Camp 4,

Enterprise 2

The Enterprise Yellow Jackets (16-11) and first year head coach Austin Hood will have to battle back from a 1-0 deficit if they’re to win their MHSAA 1A playoff series against French Camp Academy (17-6).

FCA never trailed and outhit the home team from EAC by a 7-2 advantage on Monday in the playoff opener at Terry Brister Field. Senior pitcher Ethan Wright struck out 13 for the visitors from Choctaw County.

He gave up two hits and walked four in six innings of work.

Errors ended up hurting Enterprise as none of the four French Camp runs were earned.

Haygan Floyd drove in both Enterprise runs with a single in the bottom of the sixth inning. The third game in the series will be played Friday at French Camp and if a fourth game is needed, it will take place at EAC on Saturday.

The series winner will move on to face the winner of the series between Simmons and Salem.

Pelahatchie 13,

Bogue Chitto 8

The visitors from Pelahatchie High (6-16) pounded out 13 hits on the way to a 13-8 win over the homestanding Bogue Chitto Bobcats (19-9) on Monday night.

The Chiefs lead the MHSAA 2A playoff series 1-0 and will host game two on Friday. The hope for BC coach Gareth Sartin and his side is to win in Rankin County on Friday to get a return game for the series finale on Saturday at home.

The Bobcats drew 17 walks, but only had five hits and stuck out 10 times.

Pelahatchie went up 2-0 in the first via a home run by J.T. Magee, but BC bounced back to grab a 3-2 lead after one complete. The visitors took over with a five run third and a four run fourth inning.

Myles Foil and Noah Magee each doubled for the Bobcat offense. Magee drove in two runs while Foil, Tucker Kyzar and Jax Leggett all drove in one run each.

The winner of the series will move on to face the winner of the series between Scott Central and North Forrest in the second round.

Pisgah 14,

West Lincoln 4

The homestanding Pisgah Dragons (18-7) posted 11 hits in a run-rule shortened 14-4 win over West Lincoln (7-14) to open the MHSAA 2A playoff series between the schools.

The Bears pulled to within 6-3 in the third inning before Pisgah scored six more runs in the bottom of the fourth to break the game wide open.

Freshman Brody Dillon had two hits for the Bears while Gabe Gennaro and Jackson Smith also hit safely for the green and white.

Gennaro drove in a run for WL coach Tony Davis and the Bears also got an RBI from Karson Temple.

The series will return to West Lincoln for game two on Friday at 6 p.m. If a third game is needed, it’ll be played at Pisgah on Saturday.

The winner of the series will advance to face Mize (22-4) in the second round.
