Dozens of people gathered in front of the Lincoln County/Brookhaven Government Complex at noon Thursday for the National Day of Prayer.
Led by Rev. David Williams, director of the Lincoln Baptist Association, the program followed the national theme of “Pray Fervently in Righteousness and Avail Much.” It is taken from the Biblical book of James — “The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much” (5:16b).
Mayor Joe Cox read a proclamation from the City acknowledging the day, followed by the presentation of U.S. and state flags by the Brookhaven High School ROTC, the Pledge of Allegiance led by teens from the Mississippi Adolescent Center, and the national anthem sung by the Brookhaven Academy choir.
Several prayers were offered during the short program: for the community, city and county, by Rev. Jerry Durr; for schools and educational system, by Dr. David Martin; for economy and business leaders, by Sen. Jason Barrett; for the military, by veteran Greg Marlow; for family ministry and mission, by Pastor Ray McDuffie; for law enforcement and first responders, by Sheriff Steve Rushing; and for the nation and leaders, by Dr. Hal Kitchings.
