Wesson’s Coates selected as Lindy Callahan Scholar Athlete

Wesson Cobra Grayson Coates was one of 16 seniors from around the state invited to Jackson on Wednesday for a prestigious presentation.

Coates, who has played golf, baseball and basketball for the Cobras, was picked as a Lindy Callahan Scholar-Athlete. The award is given to one boy and one girl from each of the MHSAA’s eight geographical districts.

Coates was honored as the District VII selection along with Natalie Grace Deer.

Each scholar-athlete is presented with a $1,500 college scholarship.

Coates started in basketball for coach Rusty Newman and in baseball as an outfielder for coach Vance Windom.

Next up for Coates is Mississippi State, where he’ll study aerospace engineering, A 4.0+ student at Wesson, he’s made a 32 on the ACT.

He is the son of Joe and Karen Coates.
