DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Korbin Ashmore, Wesson High

If you know ball, then you know the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns got a good one when they signed Wesson senior defensive lineman Korbin Ashmore earlier this month.

A very good high school football player that will only get better, Ashmore is the 2024 Daily Leader All-Area Most Valuable Defensive Player.

The 6-foot-5, 265-pound Ashmore is a pickup truck driving, boot wearing, country dude from Copiah County. He is extremely polite when you talk to him off the field and is beloved by his classmates and friends.

On the field though, he plays with violence and physicality that is only magnified by his size. And with his broad shoulders and frame, he’s a guy that you can imagine only growing once he gets to the collegiate level.

Finding guys that can play in the defensive trenches isn’t an easy position for college coaches to fill. Defensive lineman at that level, especially those who play inside, need to be big and strong and durable and tough.

Ashmore checked all those boxes and signed with ULL after being named MAC 3A All-State for a second straight season for Wesson head coach Jeremy Loy.

An All-Area selection multiple times in his career, Ashmore made 61 tackles and a team best 18 tackles for a loss in 2024 as the Cobras went 7-3 and reached the MHSAA 3A postseason.

He ends his career as a Cobra with 169 total tackles, 41 tackles for a loss, and 12.5 career sacks.

One thing Ashmore can count on is that he’ll have all of Wesson following him on his college football journey.

His former teachers, coaches, and the kids he’s grown-up playing with all these years know that the gentle giant can flip a switch and turn into a beast when the ball is kicked off.

Something that the ULL coaching staff surely can’t wait to see happen in the future.
