JACKSON — Lincoln County Sen. Jason Barrett introduced three recent bills to benefit Lincoln County in the Mississippi legislature. One of those bills was brought up in a Lincoln County Board of Supervisors docket meeting on Feb. 12.
According to senate bill 3061, Lincoln County would be able to impose a $25 fine in addition to other fines for convictions in justice court, circuit court and county court. Convictions for driving under the influence would result in a $50 fine.
Funds raised by those fines could then be used by the Lincoln County Board of Supervisors to pay for repairs and renovations to the Lincoln County Courthouse and pretrial detention facilities. The bill would take effect upon passage and needs a 3/5ths majority.
Supervisors passed a resolution to support the bill last week. The bill was introduced Feb. 17 and was referred to the senate’s Local and Private and Finance committees.
Barrett introduced two bills to ask for appropriations from the FY2026 general fund last week. SB2939 asks for $21,600,000 to be appropriated for infrastructure projects. Of those funds, $21,100,000 would go towards the repair and resurfacing of county roads. An additional $500,000 would go towards making the Lincoln County Courthouse more ADA accessible if the bill is passed.
SB2940 would go towards purchasing emergency response equipment for the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. In total, $150,000 would be appropriated.
