This year, Brookhaven voters will choose their preferred candidates for the offices of mayor and the board of aldermen.

Each of the 18 candidates for various offices was sent an identical questionnaire that asked: assessment of the current occupant’s effectiveness (including self-assessment); transparency and accountability; pressing issues; how their role would improve the City and Lincoln County; and why voters should elect them to the position.
Candidates for Alderman of Ward 1 are the incumbent, James Magee Jr., and James Vincent Payton. Both are running as Democrats.
Candidates for Ward 2 are incumbent Shannon Moore and Ann Wilson, both running on the Democrat ticket.
Ward 1, Magee
My name is James Magee Jr. I have been a resident of Ward One 49 years. I’m seeking re-election for Ward One Alderman, A 93’ Brookhaven High School graduate, 95’ Copiah-Lincoln Community College graduate, 99’ The University of Southern Mississippi graduate, a regional technology manager for a top-tier grocier, multiple small businesses, AJFC Community Action Group board member, Certified Municipal Official, City budget chairman and Tourism council member.
Four years ago, you placed your trust in me to serve as your Ward One Alderman, and for that, I am humbly grateful. Together, we have made great progress improving and advocating for the needs in our community. My first term has proven success by accomplishing sanitary sewage improvement project, extending water lines project, replacement bridge, rework water treatment plant, 8 blighted properties removed, Main Street lighting project, drainage projects, brought forward the H.O.M.E program for the elders to improve, or rebuild their housing structures, Yearly Back-to-School backpack event for the youth, Bottled water giveaway for the city and Turkey giveaway to the elders.
I will continue to be steadfast in serving with integrity, dedication, and progress while continuing to be transparent utilizing social media outlets, create a monthly newsletter, video sharing board meeting and maintaining open communication 24/7 access via cell phone (601.201.1787) and email (jmageej21@gmail.com).
Steps to combat the pressing crime issues will start with working diligently on day one with the new Chief of Police on more police presence, creating substations to create a safer environment with the entire city.
Constituents in Ward One should consider re-electing me to continue the progressive improvement to the ward and city, by having the relationships and leverage to complete major community projects and advocating for funding by the way of grants and appropriations from the state.
Ward 1, Payton
My name is James Vincent Payton. I am resident of Ward 1 as I am seeking the office of Alderman for Ward 1. My career background is in transportation and logistics, which I have worked in for over 30 years. I started my own company, Payton Logistics, LLC 15 years ago and I currently work in that business as an owner/operator.
I appreciate the work that the current Alderman has done during his tenure.
If elected, my personal goal is to increase visibility, accessibility, and transparency in ward 1 and throughout the city, in general. This is a major concern for many citizens, including myself. Increasing communication and engagement among the citizens of ward 1 by being visible, accessible, and transparent about the issues that we face will help our citizens feel included, supported, and valued. This tactic alone can change the trajectory of our city.
With transparency and accountability, it is important to start with integrity. I will be straightforward and honest and do my best to keep my ward abreast of the issues. I have no problem taking accountability. Owning up to mistakes and strategizing to find better solutions is how we continue to grow, individually and collectively. Citizens will be able to contact me about their concerns and can expect timely responses and feedback.
Issues that concern me for my ward and the city are safety and economic disparities. Supporting local law enforcement, being forward thinking, and strategizing to find solutions to promote safety and enhance our economy will be a focus. Being proactive and welcoming innovation in these areas will be my aim.
My role in this office will improve the city of Brookhaven because I will work diligently alongside everyone on the board and the people of this great city to help make it everything that we know it can be.
I am seeking this office to be a bridge to connect the citizens to our local government. It is imperative that the citizens feel involved, seen, heard, and supported. If elected I will be persistent in my efforts to foster community and trust.
I have been a resident of Brookhaven for over 40 years. I have been married to my wife Deborah (Chatman) Payton for 35 years. I have 2 daughters, Darci (Travis) Newton and April West. I am the proud grandfather of 3.
Ward 2, Moore
My name is Shannon Moore. I have proudly called Ward 2 home for over 20 years. This community has shaped who I am, and it’s been an honor to serve as your Alderman. I’m seeking re-election so that I can continue to work alongside you to make Ward 2 a better place for all of us. As a Project Manager, I work closely with multiple city boards, overseeing million-dollar projects and managing complex budgets. I bring a solid foundation of experience, skills, and integrity to the board of aldermen. My focus will always be on delivering results that serve the best interests of our community. Your voice, your needs, my priority – I work for you!
How would you grade your success to this point in this office? Do you plan to keep things going in the same direction, or change course?
As your Alderman, I measure my success by the progress we’ve made together. Every step forward has been a team effort, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved. From improving infrastructure to creating opportunities for our families, I’ve worked tirelessly to meet the needs of our community. But I know that true success is never final—it’s about being responsive, staying engaged, and always striving for improvement. There’s always more to be done, and I’m committed to ensuring our community continues to thrive for generations to come. One of the accomplishments I’m most proud of is the transformation of Dr. A.L. Lott Sportsplex. I was proud to be at the forefront of ensuring this facility was upgraded with a paved parking lot, a fenced basketball court, and a pavilion with bathrooms. This sportsplex is the heart of Ward 2, and it’s a space where our community can gather, play, and take pride in. It has truly become a place that reflects the spirit of our people, and I’m honored to have helped make that happen.
I believe we’re heading in the right direction, and I’m committed to continuing the work we’ve started. But true progress comes when we work together as a team. I’ve always valued the collaboration with my fellow board members to ensure the greatest good for Brookhaven. Moving forward, whether we stay the course or adjust as needed, I’ll always prioritize working together for the benefit of Brookhaven.
How would you address transparency and accountability of this office?
I deeply believe that transparency and accountability are the foundation of trust between elected officials and the community they serve. If re-elected, I will ensure that the residents of our ward are always informed about what’s happening in our community by providing regular updates through social media and direct contact. I will make our budget and decisions are easily accessible to everyone, and I will actively seek out your feedback to make sure your voice is heard. I’m committed to being open, approachable, and responsive, creating clear channels for you to share concerns, and acting on them with urgency. Together, we can continue building a stronger, more transparent community where everyone’s needs are valued and addressed.
What are the most pressing issues in this office and how would you address them?
Hiring a New Police Chief: One of the most important issues right now is the hiring of a new police chief at the expiration of the current elected police chief’s term. While I did not agree with the change in the process that removed the people’s vote, I understand the responsibility this decision carries. I am committed to working alongside the Board of Aldermen to ensure that we select a police chief who is not only highly qualified but also someone who prioritizes the safety and trust of our community. It’s crucial that we have a leader who can unite and guide our police department while maintaining transparency and strong relationships with the people who call this community home.
Blighted Properties:
Another issue that weighs heavily on my heart is the condition of blighted properties. I know that some of these properties are owned by heirs who no longer reside in Brookhaven, while others are owned by individuals or families who simply don’t have the financial means to make necessary repairs. For many, these properties hold sentimental value, representing memories and family history, and it’s painful to see them in disrepair or torn down. Neighbors aren’t happy, as these properties not only bring down property values, but they also contribute to a sense of abandonment and a lack of life in our communities. These properties don’t just affect the owners; they impact the entire neighborhood. I’m committed to working with property owners, offering resources, and finding solutions to help restore these homes and bring life back to our neighborhoods. Together, we can make Ward 2 a place where everyone takes pride in their homes and the community they help create.
Garbage Contracts and Service: Finally, there’s the issue of our garbage contracts. Garbage collection is no easy task, and like many industries, we are facing labor shortages. The Board has worked diligently to find the best company to meet the needs of Brookhaven. I’ve heard some people suggest going back to the old way of having our own workers, but that is no longer financially feasible. The city of Brookhaven would have to pay for insurance for both workers and trucks, purchase and maintain trucks, and rely on workers, rain or shine, to pick up our garbage. Unfortunately, that model is no longer sustainable in today’s world. The company we have now only requires a driver, which makes it easier to keep the trucks running smoothly. It’s always easier to replace one driver than to replace a whole team of workers. Once the new company learned all the streets, we should be off to a smoother, more efficient process. So far in Ward 2, everything has been running on schedule, and garbage is being picked up on time. If you experience any issues, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly.”
My role in this office is not just about making decisions; it’s about serving the people of Brookhaven and Lincoln County with dedication and heart. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with residents, local businesses, and fellow board members to tackle the challenges we face, and I’m truly proud of what we’ve accomplished together. But there’s still more work to be done. I want to continue improving our infrastructure, cleaning up blighted properties, and ensuring that every resident has access to the services they need. Above all, I want to create a community where we can all thrive—a place where our children feel safe, our families are supported, and our neighborhoods are proud. I understand the responsibility that comes with serving this community, and I promise to continue giving my all to ensure Brookhaven and Lincoln County move forward in the right direction. I’m here to listen, to serve, and to make sure that our future is one we can all be proud of.”
I’m seeking re-election because I believe in the future of Ward 2 and Brookhaven, and I’m dedicated to seeing it grow and thrive. Over the years, I’ve had the honor of serving you and watching our city grow, particularly the revitalization of our downtown area. We’ve come a long way, but I know there’s still more work to be done.
I ask for your vote because I am not just a candidate — I am your Alderman, your friend, your neighbor, and someone who has always put the best interests of Ward 2 first. I’ve proven my dedication through my actions. I’m open, transparent, and always available. I answer my phone when you call, return your missed calls, and check in on you. I don’t give broken promises or sell pipe dreams — if I say I’m going to do something, you can count on me to get the job done. I’ve always done what you’ve needed me to do, and I will continue to do everything in my power to make Brookhaven a place where we all feel proud to call home.
I’m blessed to be married to the wonderful Valerie Moore, who has been not just my partner in life but also my greatest teammate. Valerie has worked tirelessly alongside me to support our community and help make it a better place. Together, we’re raising three amazing sons — Tavis, Ty, and Trey. We’re also proud to share our home with two loyal German Shepherds, Duke and Sadie. I’m also a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan — The American Team…We Dem Boys!
Ward 2, Wilson
My name is Ann Wilson, a proud native of this wonderful city and a current resident of Ward 2. I am the sole proprietor of Wilson Paralegal Services, where we proudly assist deserving residents in qualifying for Social Security and disability benefits.
My decision to run for the office of Alderman in Ward 2 comes from a deep sense of duty to our community. I have long been involved in various community organizations and am the co-founder of two non-profits right here in Brookhaven. Through these experiences, I’ve come to see the challenges facing our community, and I’m determined to do something about it.
Too many issues in Ward 2 have been ignored for far too long. Our area has been neglected, and our current Alderman has not demonstrated the vision or leadership needed to bring about change. It’s time for new leadership, a leadership that listens to the people and actively works to improve our community.
As your Alderman, I will ensure that the voices of Ward 2 are not only heard but actively listened to. I will establish a dedicated line of communication for citizens to voice their concerns, and I will hold regular town hall meetings. These meetings won’t just be a place to complain — they will be forums for meaningful discussion, where you will receive consistent updates and know that your concerns are being addressed.
There are individuals and groups in our community who are already working hard to revitalize Ward 2. As your Alderman, I will work alongside these visionaries to ensure the city provides the support needed to make these efforts successful. We will work together to bring real, lasting change to our area.
While my primary focus will be on revitalizing Ward 2, I know that progress in East Brookhaven benefits all of Brookhaven. The revitalization we envision will spark pride in our community, create new job opportunities, and attract businesses to consider Brookhaven as a prime location for their operations.
I’ve long been a strong advocate for transparency within our city government, and nothing will change if I am elected. All citizens of Brookhaven, not just Ward 2, deserve to know how decisions are made. I attend Board meetings, and I can tell you that voting yea or nay on items 1-12 is not enough. The current process leaves too many people in the dark, forced to assume why decisions are being made — and we all know what happens when we ASSUME.
My passion for the people of Brookhaven cannot be overstated. My work ethic is unmatched, and every day I fight for the dignity of those I serve. I dedicate my personal time to helping small businesses, non-profits, and empowering citizens through my non-profit — appropriately named Better Brookhaven.
I am not someone who stands by when there’s work to be done. The time for change is now! You can join us in this effort, or you can watch from the sidelines — but make no mistake, change is coming to East Brookhaven when you elect Ann Wilson Alderman of Ward 2!!!
