Local 4-H team wins at state fair
The Lincoln County 4-H Livestock Judging Team won first place at the Mississippi State Fair recently and have qualified to compete on the national level at the Western National Roundup in Denver, Colo.
Participating on the first place 4-H Livestock Judging Team were Rachel McDaniel, who also placed as third high individual in judging, and Sara Terrell, Mackenzie Ritchie and Brant White. The team is coached by Brandon Alberson, Extension agent.
The Western National Roundup provides a place for youth to compete nationally while encouraging teamwork and self-confidence, and while focusing on the 4-H Mission Mandates: science, engineering, technology, mathematics, healthy living and citizenship, Alberson said in a press release.
Leadership is developed at these events by encouraging decision-making and teamwork skills, critical thinking and independence, Alberson continued.
Healthy Living is demonstrated at the workshops, the dances, the educational tours, and through the lifestyle that is shown through each contest, Alberson said. Educational tours and entertainment provide service learning and community-based learning opportunities, focusing on the importance of each youth’s citizenship within his or her team, community, and nation, he added.
Participation in Western National Roundup is open to 4-H member delegates, volunteer leaders and Extension professionals approved by their respective state offices.
Each state is invited to enter one 4-H livestock judging team consisting of no more than four members. The three members with the three high scores will be counted for the team points; however, all individuals are eligible for individual awards.
