Local men arrested after police car chase

Two Brookhaven men have been charged with aggravated assault on a police officer and resisting arrest after a car chase early Friday morning.

Chance N. Smith, 20, of 1311 Adolf Lane, and Darrius Mitchell, 21, of 405 E. Chippewa St., are currently in the Lincoln County jail.

At 3:30 a.m. Friday, a complaint was made on Union Street, said Brookhaven Police Chief Bobby Bell. The complainant alleged that two men discharged a firearm at him. While the officers were taking the report, Smith and Mitchell drove by, Bell said. After determining they were the suspects the complainant was discussing, the officers attempted to stop and question them.

The two men left in their vehicle and officers chased them to New Sight Road,then to Industrial Park  Drive, to North Street Drive and finally to Center Street.

One of the suspects exited the vehicle and shot at the officer, Bell said. The two men ran a block over to Benjamin Street, where they were then captured, the chief added.
