Backpack give-away set in city this Saturday

The Rev. Jerry L. Wilson, District One supervisor, and his wife Mary Wilson, Ward Three alderwoman, have organized a back-to-school backpack giveaway.

The couple will be distributing the backpacks on Aug. 2, from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the corner of South Second Street and East Minnesota Street. In order to receive a backpack, all children have to be accompanied by a parent or a legal guardian with no exceptions.

Sponsors for the give-away are the Wilsons, Waste Pro, Brookhaven Glass Co., Larry and Betty Elckenloff, Laveran German, Bobby Moak, Ryan Holmes, Deuce McAllister and James Tillman.

They plan to give away at least 300 brand new backpacks to local children in need.

“My wife and I thank the Lord that the sponsors and ourselves are able to bless the children of our community in this way,” said the supervisor.

If anyone would like to donate backpacks to the back-to-school backpack effort, they can contact Mary Wilson at 601-695-1132.
