Habitat for Humanity began the project at the corner Choctaw Street and Dr. Martin L. King Jr. Drive in April. With the help of volunteers and local businesses, the home is taking shape. Labor and supplies have been donated or discounted for the construction.

“It really looks good in a community that so many people have stepped up to help,” said volunteer Pete Corken. “I’m a retired commercial contractor and like I ask everyone else to do, I thought I could give something back to the community.”

Corken has taken charge in helping organize donations and supplies for the Brookhaven home. He said it usually takes eight months to complete a house, so this one may be done in three more, but it is impossibly to know exactly because it’s based on volunteer labor.

“We are always asking people to donate,” said Corken. He added that the home needs painting work to be donated.

If interested in contributing to the project contact Corken at 601-757-6059.

Habitat’s goal is to complete one house each year.
