New local group: Choral Society seeks talent
The vocal talents of Brookhaven now have a chance to come together and sing in concert. Jens Oliva is directing a community choir for Lincoln County and the surrounding areas and is looking for more participants.
“There are a lot of talented adults here who sing and children as well,” said Oliva. He said this would give them all the opportunity to come together and perform.
The Lincoln County Choral Society will hold its first rehearsal Sept. 8 at First United Methodist Church on 215 W. Cherokee St. from 6-8 p.m. Practices will continue for every Monday until the holiday performance Dec. 1. Singers age 15 years and older are welcome to join.
Oliva said that this will be a trial run for next year. If it is successful, he will host another choir the following year and possibly extend the season to have a concert in both the winter and spring.
The choir will perform Bach’s Cantata, “For Unto Us A Child is Born,” and selections from John Rutter’s “Christmas Carols.” The singers will be joined by the Ole Brook Wind Symphony and will be accompanied by Steve Russell.
Oliva said he wants people who enjoy singing to be able to have a good time singing together in a large choir. He added that not all local singers may have a high school or church choir they can join, so this gives them that chance.
Oliva has been a high school choir director for 16 years, has served as the choir director at Faith Presbyterian Church for three and a half years and is now directing at First United Methodist Church.
