Shooting leaves one dead

A male has been shot and killed in the yard of 227 Washington Street.

Brookhaven Police Chief Bobby Bell said a call came in at 1:03 p.m. reporting a shooting. Officers arrived on the scene and found a Gregory James, 36 laying the yard. James was pronounced dead at 1:44 p.m. by Deputy Coroner Robert Tyler.

Bell said the have someone of interest but no one has been taken in to custody.

Bell said investigators found several 9 mm shell casings at the scene.

BPD, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department and Brookhaven Fire Department were all on scene following the report.

James owned his own business and leaves behind nine children. He lived in Lincoln County his whole life.

“He was a hard-working man. He loves his kids, and he loves spending time with us,” Trevienne James, Gregory James’ son, said. “If he was spending time with one of his kids, he was spending time with all the kids.

“I want everyone to know I will keep everything he had going,” Trevienne James continued. “I appreciate the support everyone has shown us.”
