Lee Herman Henderson, 9, was injured in a hit and run accident Tuesday afternoon on Second Street in downtown Brookhaven.

Police Chief Bobby Bell said his office received a call at 6 p.m. about the incident. He said Lee was riding his scooter when a white car hit his left leg. The case is still under investigation.

A witness to the event said Lee and his friend were trying to get off the road as the car approached. The witness said as Lee was moving the car struck his leg. No one was able to report the make or model of the car.

Lee is currently receiving treatment at the Blair E. Batson Children’s Hospital in Jackson. His leg was broken in two places. His mother, Shanta Henderson said that Lee has had two surgeries and doctors have put a metal plate and screws into his left leg.

“He is in a lot of pain right now. He is a tough little boy,” said Henderson. “I thank God for sparing my child’s life. I thank God that it was not worse.”

Henderson said Lee would be down for four to six weeks. She said there is a possibility they will be home Thursday, but they are not sure at this point. She added that when he does get to go home, he would be using a wheelchair and walker.

Henderson said Lee is a huge Brookhaven High School football fan and loves to watch his cousins play.

“Everyone loves him. He is just a happy, loveable young boy, and he is very intelligent,” said Henderson. “I ask everyone to continue to lift him up in prayer. He’s my only son.”

Henderson also hopes whoever is responsible will step foreword and take responsibility for their actions.

“It could have been anyone’s child,” she said.
