MONTICELLO – The Lawrence County Historical Society and the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce are teaming up to celebrate the Fourth of July plus the area’s bicentennial Friday.

Friday’s event, which is part of the year-long bicentennial celebration of territorial Lawrence County, will begin at 5 p.m. at the Atwood Water Park. Patriotic and sacred music will be performed from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Kaye Allen, with the historical society, said the event will also include entertainment, including inflatables for children and a watermelon seed spitting contest. The event will end with a fireworks display. A fire truck will also be present to keep children cool.

Everyone is invited to come at no cost.

“You might give a donation if you’d like,” Allen said, “but there’s no charge for admission.”

Food will also be available to buy, but those attending are welcome to bring their own picnics if they’d prefer.

Bicentennial commemorative T-shirts and afghans will be on sale at the event. T-shirts will be $12 or two for $20, and afghans will be $30.

“I think they ought to come because it’s a community thing with everyone together,” Allen said.

She said she heard some families will be having a family reunion in conjunction with the event. One family has children coming in from all over the U.S. to celebrate the Fourth at Atwood.
