Early kidney disease is often called the “silent” disease, so in an effort to detect problems early, the Mississippi Kidney Foundation is offering free screenings for the public in Brookhaven this Saturday.

“Early kidney disease has no symptoms,” said Lynda Richards, director of patient services with the Mississippi Kidney Foundation in Jackson. Although early kidney disease has no symptoms, it can be detected through testing.

“Blood and urine tests are the only way to know if you have kidney disease, so we encourage everyone who has high blood pressure or diabetes to be tested.

“These free screenings are providing early detection and treatment, allowing the progression of kidney disease to be delayed or even prevented,” Richards explained.

The free screening will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Mt. Wade Baptist Church at 749 North Jackson St. Tests include blood pressure, blood sugar, urinalysis, a full renal panel, complete blood count and cholesterol check.

Supplies are limited, so those interested are urged to call the Mississippi Kidney Foundation at 601-981-3611 or 1-800-232-1592 to make a reservation.

Those at risk for kidney disease include individuals with high blood pressure, diabetes or a family history of high blood pressure, diabetes or kidney disease.

Kidney disease can be treated if caught in the early stages, so “please come to our next free screening,” Richards urged.
