Lady Hornets capture two victories

The Loyd Star Lady Hornets secured a swept in their softball tournament Saturday at Jan Smith Delaughter Field.

The Lady Hornets thumped the Wesson Lady Cobras in the opener 11-1 and clobbered the Sumrall Lady Bobcats 10-1 in the final game of the night.

Loyd Star will be in action today when they travel to Bassfield for a division test. Junior varsity action starts at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6 p.m.

Lady Hornets 10, Sumrall 1 

Abigail Thornton started the first for the Lady Hornets with a double. A poor throw from the Lady Bobcats allowed Meagan Norton to turn a single into a double, scoring Thornton for the first run of the inning.

Sumrall had more bad luck with throwing, as two pitches would sail past the catcher, scoring two runs. Shelby Smith’s single scored the fourth run in the inning.

The Lady Hornets continued to cause problems for the Lady Bobcats in the second inning, scoring three more runs, led by a double from Ali Gartman and a single from Makenzie Smith.

Thornton’s double in the third pushed across another run. In the fourth, Madison Jones started the inning with a walk and Makenzie Smith joined her after being hit by a pitch. Shelby Smith’s two-RBI double pushed in the two runners.

Rachel Green’s single in the fourth inning scored the Lady Bobcat’s only run of the contest.

Makenzie Smith picked up the win for the Lady Hornets with eight strikeouts and one walk.

Ember West suffered the loss for Sumrall with two strikeouts and two walks. Karley Russell (1K, 2BB) also pitched for the Lady Bobcats, in relief.

“The girls played a great game. Hitting and defense played as a team,” said Loyd Star coach Jan Delaughter.

Abigail Thornton and Ali Gartman led the Lady Hornets with two doubles and one RBI each. Megan Norton hit a double and had a RBI. Shelby Smith had a single, a double, and three RBIs. Makenzie Smith hit safely with a single and a RBI.

Rachel Green, Karley Russell and Laken Williamson each hit safely with a single for the Sumrall Lady Bobcats.

Lady Hornets 11, Wesson 1 

The Lady Hornets jumped on the Lady Cobras, scoring three runs in the first inning to grab an early lead.

Loyd Star would add three more runs in the fourth and finish off Wesson in the fifth, plating five runs.

Makenzie Smith pitched the win for Loyd Star with six strikeouts and no walks. Ali Gartman (1K, 0BB) also pitched in relief.

Amber Brinson suffered the setback for Wesson with two strikeouts and no walks.

Megan Norton powered the Lady Hornets with a homerun and a single. Johnna Norman contributed a double and a single. Abigail Thornton provided a triple. Shelby Smith and Julie Smith had a double each. Meagan Poole and Gartman hit safely.

Harmoni Ashley and Brook Jones paced the Lady Cobras with a single each.
