After a successful opening last weekend, Brookhaven Little Theatre’s “The Music Man” returns this weekend for two evening shows Friday and Saturday at the Haven Theater.

Both performances are at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 and are available for purchase at the Brookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce on Whitworth Avenue. Doors to the performance open 30 minutes prior to the play. Reserve-ticket holders are encouraged to be there by 7:15 p.m.

The play features 48 cast members, plus the Loyd Star High School Band,” according to director Sarah Underwood. Loyd Star band leader Stuart Neal is the play’s leading man, Harold Hill, a music man/con man who falls for a small town librarian.

Last Friday’s opening night of the play was held in conjunction with the Brookhaven Regional Arts Guild’s Art Walk. There was a reception in the lobby and BRAG had artwork on display that will be part of a silent auction. The silent auction continues through the entire run of the play. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Save the Haven Fund and BRAG.

The auction features work by BRAG artists, said Sue Minter, guild president. “Some even depict the artist’s rendition of certain groups or scenes from the musical.”

Rules for the bidding are contained in the play program and are posted in the foyer of the Haven.

“If you remember the ‘Wreath for the Stars’ silent auction in the BLT Christmas production you will have the general idea of how this auction will work,” said Minter.

The play focuses on “Music Man” Hill, a conman who plans to filch money from River City town folks by posing as a music teacher who sells them instruments and lessons and then skips town before anyone is the wiser.

But, Hill falls for the town librarian, Marian Paroo, played by Phoenix McKissack. Miss Paroo is wise to the conman but he wins her heart when he helps her little brother overcome a speech impediment and social awkwardness.

“The cast consists of veterans and newcomers,” Underwood said. “Every person is well suited for their part, without a doubt. This is my third time to direct, but it’s the first time I’ve really picked my own show and assembled my own team, and it has been wonderful. I have a great crew.
