Local representative receives applause for pro-business stance

Mississippi representative Becky Currie from Brookhaven has received an A on her report card for the seventh time. Every year Currie has been in office she has received accolades from the Business and Education Committee report card for her pro-business legislation.

Currie said every year she works to make sure Mississippi and her district are set up for business. She added her role is to set up an atmosphere that allows for new businesses to join Mississippi and existing businesses to thrive.

A few of the legislative efforts she has taken part in include giving income tax breaks to business as an incentive for them to relocate to the state and reducing the inventory tax that is a struggle for smaller businesses to pay.

Currie, along with 59 other representatives, are categorized as business champions by the Business and Industry Political Education Committee. According to the BIPEC’s mission statement the committee is a nonprofit organization comprised of individuals, trade associations and companies who are devoted to protecting and advancing free enterprise through research, education and member action.

“I’ve always been pro-business ever since I’ve been in office. I know these are tough times for folks, and people need jobs,” said Currie. She added like most Mississippian she is working throughout the year as a representative and as a nurse with Gentiva Health Services, so she understands the need for business to thrive in Mississippi, which in turn provides jobs that support families.

Currie has been the representing District 92, which covers parts of Lincoln, Copiah and Franklin Counties since 2007.
