Rex Lumber hosts health fair
Brookhaven has become the Healthiest Hometown in Mississippi because of the community’s involvement in setting an example for positive lifestyle behaviors. One company in Lincoln County is reflecting those ideals.
Rex Lumber Company is hosting it’s annual health fair for employees Thursday. The fair will offer workers information on healthy lifestyles, routine check ups and will thank healthcare workers who have been working throughout the year with Rex Lumber. The program will also give awards to their healthcare providers.
“This is a great opportunity every year to recognize the providers who work with us throughout the year,” said Doug Boykin.
This is the second year the company is offering a health fair for it’s employees. Last year at the fair, one of their employees was found to have exceptionally high blood pressure. A couple days later the man suffered a heart attack. Boykin says he hopes the fair will help catch serious issues such as that. Boykin said he thinks if his employee had not gone through the health event that he would have died.
Boykin said he wants this event to encourage other industries to start these kinds of health programs.
Rex Lumber began operating in 1926 in Florida. The family company expanded to Brookhaven in 2009, where they produce yellow pine lumber. The local branch employs around 100 workers.
Boykin said he wants to set an example for other industries in Lincoln County to establish screenings for their employees. He said he is hoping that people will be able to see the good it does for their employees to offer these kinds of events.
The fair will last from 8 a.m. to noon. Health care professionals and industries will be there to answer questions and check blood pressure. The event will end with a lunch that will recognize health care providers in Lincoln County.
