Brookhaven’s O Foundation is back in action after the loss of their non-profit tax exemption in 2012. As of June 17, the foundation has been classified as a 501C organization and will begin serving the town again.

The One God, One Love, One People foundation, also know as the O Foundation, was established in 2006 by Brookhaven residents with a goal to build a better community, create a future for the youth, recognize positive role models and host events that support the growth of Brookhaven.

“We just try to make a better community,” said Rose Powell, O Foundation member.

The foundation is most well known for their winter VIP gala that is thrown every year in the Lincoln Civic Center to honor local heroes. Each year has been a different leader. The list includes everyone from Chief “Pap” Henderson to the Jacobs family to Dan Brown.

“It is a great bunch of people who are involved,” said Henderson, who was the first person to be honored by the foundation in 2006. “They really bring the community together.”

Powell has been working with the IRS for the past two years to reestablish the foundation. She said the IRS has been extremely nice and helpful during the paperwork process.

The O Foundation has played a role in many efforts throughout the community. The group helped name Dr. Martin L. King Drive and clean up the areas surrounding it, she said. They have worked with Sen. Sally Doty to fight obesity in the school districts, Powell added, and they also began the wall of fame in front of the Mullins school.

“We need to support that organization,” said Henderson. “It is great for the community and town. It shows great leadership and togetherness.”

Powell said she is excited about the future of the O Foundation. She added that they will host a gala this December and will be honoring Shirley Estes, Ward Four alderman.

“She looks over the whole city,” said Powell. She said that Estes helps take care of all problems across the town by working with the other aldermen.

Instead of a sit-down dinner like past years, the foundation will host a concert with local bands and light refreshments. Everyone is welcome to attend the mixer.

The foundation will be releasing more information about the event later in the year.
