Sales tax holiday is this weekend

The annual sales tax holiday is this weekend in Mississippi.

The 2014 back-to-school tax-free event is the fifth annual back-to-school tax holiday in the state. The legislature established the tax break in 2009.

This year’s tax holiday is from 12:01 a.m. Friday to midnight Saturday.

Skipping the sales tax will save shoppers 7 percent on clothing items and shoes costing $100 or less. While there is a limit on individual items, shoppers can buy as many of the permitted purchases as they want and still reap the tax benefit.

Clothing and shoes that are not for special activities are covered in the tax break, but accessory items such as purses, billfolds, jewelry, backpacks and briefcases are not. School supplies also aren’t included.

For a complete list of covered items and more information about the tax holiday, please go to http://www.tax.ms.gov/docs/2014SalesTaxHoliday_000.pdf
