Shooting suspect is taken into custody

A Brookhaven man, who had been on the run and wanted in connection with the shooting of another local man, has been apprehended and is now in custody.

Samuel Wade, 21, of 401 Industrial Park Road, was picked up by Brookhaven police Saturday and charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest and public profanity. The aggravated assault charge stems from a shooting incident that occurred on April 7.

After an altercation Saturday between two female subjects on the 900 block of Union Street, one female left the residence and returned with Wade, who apparently made threats to the residents in the house, according to Brookhaven Police Chief Bobby Bell.

Police received a disturbance call at 12:03 p.m. Upon responding to the call, police officers then spotted Wade, and stopped the vehicle that he was traveling in on Beauregard Street.

Wade then attempted to run from the police but was apprehended, said Bell.

In custody, Wade was questioned about the April 7 shooting, however, details still need to be fleshed out, Bell noted.

“He admitted that the shooting did occur, but it’s a different story than what the victim said occurred,” Bell said.

In the April incident, Wade allegedly shot Cal Patrick Hoeniges, 19, three times; Hoeniges was shot once through both his left and right thigh, and once again through his hand. Hoeniges had stated that a total five shots were fired.

Hoeniges was treated and released from the University of Mississippi Medical Center following the incident in April.

The BPD had issued a warrant for Wade in April. Early speculation was that Wade was in Pike County, possibly McComb, according to Bell.

“The last couple of weeks we have been getting tips that he was in the Union Street area, here in the city,” Bell said.

In a previous attempt to bring Wade in, BPD officials convinced the man’s family to drive him to the station. However, Wade jumped out of the car on the way, Bell said.

Wade is being held at the Lincoln County Jail. Information on whether bond has been set was not available at press time Tuesday morning.
