THE DAILY LEADER / RHONDA DUNAWAY / Stanley Stuart, retired band director from Copiah-Lincoln Community College, leads rehearsals as the Ole Brook Wind Symphony practices at the Alexander Junior High band hall recently. The group’s Spring Concert is Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Co-Lin’s Ewing Hall.

Ole Brook Wind Symphony will present its Spring Concert at Ewing Hall on Copiah-Lincoln Community College campus Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Concert director Leroy Smith said this will be a great event for Beatles fans.

“We are going to play several Beatles symphonic pieces,” he said. “We have really enjoyed getting ready for this Spring Concert. We grew up loving these songs.”

The Ole Brook Wind Symphony is a community band that was founded in 2001 by Shaw Furlow, Stanley Stewart and others.

Smith said members of the band are a variety of people from the southwest Mississippi area. The group puts on two public concerts a year – a Spring and a Fall Concert.

“Most of us are former band directors or band members; all of us are music lovers,” he said. Stanley Stuart, the well-known band director from Copiah-Lincoln Community College plays trumpet.

Smith is a former band director. Dawn Middleton, flutist and Roger Harris, saxophonist, are currently band directors in the South Pike School District. There are also a few current high school band members, former high school band members and people who just love playing their instruments.

Besides the Beatles music, people will hear compositions like “Little Owl, by Ryan Willard, and several pieces from Rodgers and Hammerstein – the great Broadway composers. Closing the program will be Jared Spears’ “At a Dixieland Jazz Funeral.”

The symphony will have a second performance on Tuesday, April 22, in the State Theatre, 202 Main St., McComb.
