Summer busy time for burglaries
Summer is a time for cookouts, beach trips and home invasions. Burglaries peak in June, July and August when houses are most frequently left empty for long vacations. Lincoln County is no exception.
“Our activity picks up over the summer time,” said Sheriff Steve Rushing. He added that the numbers vary from year to year, but when people are away from home during holidays there is an increase in theft and general crime.
State Farm insurance suggests that homeowners take extra precautions before leaving home, particularly when being away for a longer period, such as a vacation.
“State Farm agents know first-hand how the perfect family trip can be ruined by the discovery of a home break-in upon return,” said Roszell Gadson, State Farm spokesman. “Having the appropriate amount of homeowners or renters coverage is certainly important, however, we encourage residents to take the proper steps to prevent break-ins in the first place.”
Rushing said that people on vacation should not leave anything outside their homes, such as mail or newspapers that would suggest and absence to onlookers. “If you’re going to be out of town, have us or someone keep an eye on the house regularly.”
Other tips suggested by State Farm are:
• Set timers on home interior lights
• Do not broadcast your location on social media
• Alert your alarm company that you will be away from home
• Secure all valuables such as jewelry
• Lock all doors and windows
• Arrange for lawn care and before your departure, trim tree branches that may be used to enter your home
• Set exterior lighting
• Do not leave spare keys outside
• Lock the garage.
