The first ever “Second Amendment Weekend” has hunters ready to flood the firearm and ammunition stores to cash in on the tax-free weekend. Beginning today and running through Sunday, Mississippians will not have to pay the usual seven percent sales tax on ammunition, archer and firearms and associated equipment, and general hunting supplies.

“With dove season underway and deer season less than a month away, this weekend is a great time to take advantage of this tax break,” Lt. Gov. Reeves said. “Mississippians love to hunt, and this sales tax holiday makes it a little less expensive to enjoy the outdoors. I’m thankful for the support of the National Rifle Association on this effort and many other strong Second Amendment protections we’ve recently passed.”

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jeff Smith, R-Columbus, estimated during the legislative session that the state would give up $375,000 in revenue each year by temporarily lifting the sales tax on guns and hunting supplies.

Items eligible for the tax exemption include:

Ammunition:

• Gunpowder loading into the muzzle of a firearm

• Shot gun shells

Archery and Firearm – Equipment and Accessories:

• Armguards

• Arrows

• Arrow rests

• Belts designed for hunting

• Bows and bow accessories

• Bow parts

• Bow sights

• Bow string and string accessories

• Choke tubes

• Cleaning and refinishing products

• Crossbows

• Equipment or parts specifically used for repairing archery or firearm equipment

• Firearm parts

• Hearing protection

• Holsters

• Quivers

• Releases

• Safety equipment that is mounted or affixed to a firearm or bow

• Scopes and mounts that are affixed to a firearm or bow

• Shafts

• Shooting bags and pouches

• Shooting rest

• Shooting tripod, bipod or monopod

• Sights

• Slings designed for hunting

• String Wax

• Targets

• Trap or target throwers

Firearms:

• Pistols

• Revolvers

• Rifles

• Shotguns

Firearm and Archery Cases:

• Hard cases designed specifically for firearms and archery equipment

• Soft cases designed specifically for firearms and archery equipment
