Want to learn more about the Bible? Now’s the time

The Bible 101 study series is already underway at the Wellman Baptist Church in Bogue Chitto, but there’s still time to join the group and hear Wes Ellis share his knowledge about scriptures with the public.

“Some people use the Bible every day but don’t understand some things about it,” said Wes Ellis, Bible 101 group leader.

Ellis has been working in theology for more than 40 years. He has been a minister in churches in several states, from New York to Louisiana. He studied at Mississippi College and continued his education at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He received his doctorate of theology in the New Testament and Greek.

Ellis said Bible 101 covers many different areas including the origin and interpretation of the book throughout history. He discusses how the scripture has changed with time and how the Bible came into existence

He said that some things will be new to people and some people may even be shocked because they may not have thought about the book in a different way before.

“Everyone is invited; it’s informal and free,” said Ellis. “I just put my chalkboard in the sanctuary and sometimes hand out some printed material.”

Approximately 30 people attended the first class. The group meets during the 6 p.m. Sunday service and it lasts roughly 45 minutes.

Jeff Davis, the Wellman Baptist Church pastor, said this is the first time his church has offered the class and it is going really well. He added that this gives the retired pastor a chance to still teach.

Ellis said that since he has retired from the ministry, he has had time to reflect differently on the Bible. He no longer has to worry about coming up with three sermons a week and can have more time to focus on what he wants to teach in class.

The class will continue this Sunday and for at least three more Sundays in the future. For more information about Bible 101, contact Davis at 601-757-6040.
