Ben Cox, Brookhaven School District superintendent, has been elected to serve on the Board of Directors for the Mississippi Association of School Superintendents for two years.

Cox has served on MASS for multiple years through various positions and said he has seen milestones accomplished in public education in Mississippi during his time such as seeing education initiatives fully funded by the state legislature.

When a superintendent in a county is a member of MASS, other administrators in his school district become members of an affiliate organization called the Alliance of Educational Leaders of Mississippi, also known simply as Alliance, at no additional cost. The program adds approximately 2200 administrators, in addition to superintendents, throughout Mississippi to the organization.

Not only will this opportunity provide Brookhaven administrators with opportunities, but Cox also added it will give Brookhaven educators and administrators a proactive edge in the education system.

“Serving on the MASS Board will benefit the district greatly because just by attending the meetings given each month, it will give us more insight into serving our district,” said Cox.

There are 146 school districts in Mississippi with 58 elected superintendents and 88 appointed Superintendents, all of which are eligible for membership. The fellow members elected Cox to the board.

Cox has served terms on the MASS board from 2002 to 2004 and 2006 to 2010 and was president of the board for 2008-2009 school year.

MASS was organized in 1969 and celebrates forty-five years of being the “voice of education” in Mississippi this year.

The administrators of MASS and Alliance believe every single public school educator in the state is obligated to provide a safe environment for children as well as to make sure each child receives an appropriate education to function effectively in today’s society.

Cox added he has the support of other fellow board members in helping the Brookhaven School District succeed such as Hank Bounds.

“Dr. Bounds has a wealth of information and is an expert, and my reflection with him will impact the job I do in the Brookhaven School District,” said Cox.
