Lady Eagles defeats Wesson

WESSON – The Wesson Lady Cobras hosted the Florence High School Lady Eagles Tuesday night in the first home game for the Lady Cobras. Both teams battled hard, but the Lady Eagles were able to pull out the 9-5 win in slowpitch softball action.

Wesson will travel to Monticello Thursday night to face the Lady Cougars of Lawrence County. JV game time starts at 5 p.m., and varsity action begins at 6 p.m.

The Lady Eagles defeated the Lady Cobras in a 9-5 win. Even though winning pitcher Hope Harrington, only had one strike out, the Florence batters managed to hit strategically to get runners across home plate.

Sydni Lee hit a three-run home run, which put the Lady Eagles well ahead of the Lady Cobras. Amber Cain hit consistently with three singles and was also the top fielder with five outs at shortstop. Other Florence hitters were Marcie Smith – two singles and Mackenzie Harris – one double.

Lady Cobras’ pitcher, Maddie Jones, had three strikeouts and three walks. Wesson could have put up a good fight, but too many errors gave the Lady Eagles the edge to pull the win.

The Lady Cobras hit well at the plate but left runners stranded on base. Kayla Britt and Amber Brinson both got home runs. Cheyenne Gladden, Brooke Jones and Abby Meredith all got a double and a single each. Centerfield Aurianna Vaughn also protected the outfield with five outs.

In JV action,  The Lady Cobras beat the Lady Eagles with a 2-1 win Tuesday afternoon. Top hitters for the Lady Cobras were Katie McSweyn and Riley Smith with two singles each. Catherine Wilson hit a double. Wesson’s Melody Ashley was top defender with at least three plays at shortstop.
