Board Business: The Brookhaven Board of Aldermen

The Brookhaven Board of Aldermen met Tuesday, Oct. 7.

• Approved the hiring of Randy Barnes and Kendall Green as laborers in the Street Department and Jonathan J. Buie II as a non-certified police officer.

• Approved an easement on city property for the Chamber of Commerce to cut timber near Linbrook and the Industrial Park Road.

• Linda Moak, recycling coordinator, shared what she has purchased with the MDEQ grant, which has included 980 34-gallon recycling carts, 33 95-gallon recycling containers for the city school, recycle bins to place next to garbage cans on city property and signs to promote recycling throughout city. Moak said she also plans to start educational activities within the city schools. Business can now recycle if they rent a cart for $2 per month.

Moak said she has had MSA students help, and 4-H students are looking to get involved. “If you know anyone really passionate that wants to get involved, tell them to call me,” she said.

• Approved Water Department Head Keith Lewis’s request to move their radio antenna to the courthouse. It currently costs the department $1,000 per month for the phone line. The cost to move the antenna would be $1,900. With the move, the department would no longer have a monthly fee associated with it.

• Approved the addition of Co-Lin Feed and Seed and R.B. Wall onto the city water system at a cost of $6,200.

• Approved off-road diesel bid for James Case Oil at $287.90.

• Approved minutes and payrolls.

• Approved advertisement for proposals for the Solid Waste Services.

• Approve payment to Southeastern Tank & Tower Inc. in the amount of $72,342.04 for Ingram Street water tank work.

• Approved Price Brothers Transportation request to operate a public transportation service.

• Approved for Robbie Thibodeaux, Darrell Davis, Buddy Thibodeaux, Jeff Ainsworth, Eric Smith and Shane Hannah to attend fire bridge class in October. Classes are free, but travel expenses will be reimbursed.

• Approved Ward 1 Alderman Mary Wilson’s request to honor Les Bumgarner, D.W. Maxwell and Dorsey Cameron at the Nov. 3 board meeting for their service to the community.

• Approved Alderman at Large Karen Sullivan’s request to use the remaining balance on the Healthy Hometown Grant for park benches.

• Sullivan invited everyone to attend the Healthy Hometown reception at the Brookhaven High School Auditorium at 10 a.m. Tuesday. There will be parade from the courthouse to BHS at 9:45 a.m.

• Accepted the sign made by Select Signs for the Police Department, naming the building after former Chief Pap Henderson. Current Police Chief Bobby Bell is collecting pictures of past chiefs to hang inside the building.

• Ward 4 Alderman Shirley Estes reminded everyone the city is not responsible for the pick up of debris from renovations or remodeling but will do so for a fee.

• Mayor Joe Cox said Oxford Acoustics evaluated the FEMA Building and is working on a quote and presentation.

• Cox also announced his position appointments to the Tourism and Economic Development Board: himself, as mayor, David Phillips, as alderman, Terry Reid, as Recreation Department head, Garrick Combs, as executive director of the Chamber. These members will appoint additional advisory board members as representatives from several industries, including banking, schools, restaurant, hotel and retail.
