Wesson divides with Amite County

LIBERTY – The Wesson Cobras traveled to Liberty Thursday night to face the Amite County Trojans.

The Wesson varsity girls were unable to beat the Lady Trojans with a final score of 30-48. The Wesson varsity boys upset the Trojans with a close score of 64-62.

Wesson will travel to Magnolia Monday to participate in the South Pike Tournament.

AMITE COUNTY 48, WESSON 30 

The Lady Cobras fell to the Lady Trojans with a disappointing loss of 48-30 Thursday night.

Carnesha Green led the offense for the Lady Cobras with a total of 12 points. Other top scorers for the Lady Cobras were Aurianna Vaughan with nine points and Jashia Smith with four points.

Amite County’s Destiny Williams led the scoreboard for the Lady Trojans with 12 points and Fredeika Smith scored 10 points.

Coach Rusty Newman stated, “The girls came out flat tonight and never got anything going. We just aren’t playing well right now. Hopefully we can figure things out and begin playing better soon.”

 WESSON 64, AMITE COUNTY 62 OT 

The Wesson Cobras varsity boys continued their winning streak with a close win over Amite County Thursday night with a final score of 64-62.

Tyler Robinson led the Cobras with 22 points, six steals and five rebounds. Jermaine James also scored 10 points and had an aggressive defense showing with 10 steals. Other top scorers for the Cobras were Dartavious Dixon with 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals and Eric Rhymes with 10 points, five rebounds and three assists.

Trojans top scorer was Darrion Robinson with 18 points. Kevin Williams scored 18 points and D’Kenyace Robinson scored 14 points for the Trojans.

Coach Rusty Newman reflected on the win by stating, “This game was action packed. Amite County is a very scrappy team and they fought hard all night. We didn’t defend real well overall, so we are fortunate to get this win.” He continued, “The guys dug deep and refused to quit. Anthony Jones was unable to play due to injury, so it was good to see some other guys step up and make plays.”
