With elections now over, Monday night’s Lincoln County School District’s Board of Trustees meeting hosted the two winners who will assume duties in January.

Superintendent-elect Mickey Myers and board member-elect Diane Gill were both present to begin learning the ropes for their new positions. Gill will represent the West Lincoln area on the school board. The Bogue Chitto position was also up for re-election and incumbent Ricky Welch won another term.

Business Manager Cheryl Shelby went over October’s financial reports for the district. She said that ad valorem taxesand the Mississippi Adequate Education Program are the largest sources of income for the district. She said with $1.4 million in expenditures per month, payroll is the largest expense for the district.

“Between us and the city (school district), we’re probably the biggest employers in the county,” she said.

She said most of the ad valorem taxesand MAEP money goes directly toward payroll. However, Superintendent Terry Brister told Myers and Gill that has not always been the case. Shelby said when she first started the district was using 16th section money to fulfill payroll, and now they use that money to make capital improvements, such as constructing new buildings.

“It’s something as a district to be proud of,” Brister said. “It’s all because of these of five board members and [Shelby].”

Brister also reported on ongoing projects at the school. He said the district is finishing up classrooms and the parking lot at Enterprise. Work is being done on the locker rooms at Loyd Star, and they are still looking at adding lights to the baseball field. He said they continue to look at the football field project. At Bogue Chitto, the district is looking at building a new concession stand and improve dugouts at the softball field.

In other board business:

• The board approved Enterprise Principal Shannon Eubanks’ request for Charissa Burke to become a non-compensated assistant principal. She will have duties before and after school.

• The board approved a use of school facilities request for Dana Wallace to hold art classes after school hours at Bogue Chitto.

The next school board meeting will be Dec. 7 at 5 p.m.
