Brakemen get revenge; sweep Rankin Rednecks

The Brookhaven Brakemen used superior pitching and timelyhitting to sweep the Rankin County Rednecks Monday night, at MoyerField. It was sweet revenge for the Brakemen who lost a 2-1 Sundaydecision to the Rednecks at Pearl.

Game One saw the Brakemen shut out the Rednecks 8-0, behind the4-hitter by pitcher Josh Garrett. Brookhaven took the nightcap10-2, as Rankin County committed 6 errors in the game.

Brookhaven (9-6) will host the Hub City Wheels of Hattiesburgtonight, in a doubleheader. Game One is slated to begin at 5:00p.m.

The Rednecks are 9-5 on the season.

Brookhaven 8, Rankin County 0

Garrett held the Necks at bay throughout the game. He allowed noruns, issued 3 base-on-balls and struck out 1.

Brookhaven took a 1-0 lead after 1 inning of play. Lance Newmanreached on a fielder’s choice. Chris Dunn singled, moving Newman tosecond. Newman would eventually score as the Brakemen took theearly advantage.

Brookhaven increased their lead to 3-0 in their half of thethird. Cager Garner reached on an error and stole second. J.T.Hardcastle singled, moving Garner to third. Newman’s single scoredGarner. Dunn walked to load the bases. Two batters later, BrettHederman walked to score Hardcastle.

The Brakemen exploded for five in the fourth. Jason Miles walkedand stole second. Garner walked. Hardcastle reached on a fielder’schoice to load the bases. Newman walked to score Miles. A pitch hitDunn, scoring Garner.

Brandon Atkins doubled home Hardcastle, Newman and Dunn. AndyBoehmer suffered the loss for Rankin County.

Hardcastle led the offensive attack, going 2-for-3 with 2singles and 2 runs scored.

Brookhaven 10, Rankin County 1

Rankin County looked to gain a split in Game 2. In theirhalf of the first, Josh Davis singled. Cliff Crouse singled toscore Davis from first, to give the Rednecks an early 1-0lead.

Brookhaven had other ideas as the Brakers gained a 1-1deadlock in the bottom of the second. Brandon Atkins walked, stolesecond and moved to third on fielding error by Rankin County.Atkins later scored on a ground out.

The Brakemen took a 2-1 in their half of the fourth.Newman singled. Dunn walked, moving Newman to second. Both runnersadvanced on an error by Rankin County. Brett Hederman grounded intoa 5-3 play, scoring Newman.

Brookhaven ignited the scoreboard for 7 runs and 7 hitsin the fifth, as Brakemen head coach Pete Young saw 12 batters goto the plate. Hardcastle, Garner, Dunn, Hederman, Atkins, Milton,and Ricky Carraway all crossed home plate.

The Brakemen added the 10th run in the sixth. John Bondygrounded to third, but the high throw to first sailed into foulterritory. The ball was retrieved and thrown to third, but theerrant throw went towards the third base bullpen allowing Bondy toscore.

Jay Foster pitched well for Brookhaven. He went 6innings, allowing 1 earned run on 4 hits; walking 3 and strikingout 2.
