Paul 1-hits Jax Senators

Joseph Paul showcased his pitching skills Tuesday night on MoyerField. Paul limited the Jackson Senators to just one hit in sixinnings and the Brookhaven Brakemen marched to an 11-0 Fourth ofJuly triumph in Cotton State League action before a paid attendancecrowd of 96.

Paul, a former Copiah-Lincoln Community College standout whopitched at Southern Miss last season, held the Senators hitlessuntil Casey Smith hit a sixth-inning double. Paul struck out 5batters and walked 2 before Jay Foster replaced him in the top ofthe seventh.

The Brakemen (16-12), sponsored by the Brookhaven OrthopedicCenter, continue their homestand Thursday night, hosting theRaymond Cannon for a 6:30 test. They host the Rankin Rednecks for aFriday doubleheader, starting at 5 p.m.

Two more home dates conclude the Brakemen’s appearances on MoyerField in this inaugural season. They’ll host Raymond Saturday nightat 6:30 and Clinton’s Bluff Sunday at 2.

“Paul has thrown the ball well all season,” said Brakemen fieldmanager Pete Young. “He and (Josh) Garrett have been our mostconsistent pitchers.”

Paul had plenty of support on offense as his teammates collecteda total of 14 hits. The Brakemen were powered by shortstop ChrisDunn who slugged a 3-run homer in the third inning. It was Dunn’ssecond homer of the season.

Dunn, Lance Newman, Brandon Atkins, Seth Lofton and BrittHederman had 2 hits apiece for the Brakers.

“Everybody is swinging the bat better,” said Young. “I’ve beenpleased with the way we swung the bats the last three weeks.”

Foster allowed a pair of seventh inning singles to Sim Shanksand Brandon Page. With 2 runners on base and no outs, Foster fannedA.J. Cochet and Ben Lindsey. He got Carl Wiggins on a popup to thesecond baseman for the final out of the game.

Young’s team will conclude their season next week with roadgames at Raymond, Clinton and Hattiesburg. He said plans are underway to select a Cotton State League all-star team which willcompete in the state semipro tournament later this month.
