Loyd Star took advantage of some key Brookhaven errors and madesome outstanding defensive plays to sting the Lady Panthers 11-8Monday night, at Loyd Star.

Loyd Star took advantage of some key Brookhaven errors and madesome outstanding defensive plays to sting the Lady Panthers 11-8Monday night, at Loyd Star. The Lady Hornets also produced a 7-runthird inning which was instrumental in their victory.

Loyd Star (2-3) will host West Lincoln Thursday, with the JVgame beginning at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6.

A Lincoln County showdown ensued on Highway 550 as two teamsless than 10 miles apart did battle.

Lady Hornets’ first-year head coach Lori Britt was pleased withher team’s effort. “Anytime you can beat a team from the county orin your area, it is a big win,” said Coach Britt.

Brookhaven, coached by Lisa Covington and John Ogden, took anearly 4-0 lead in the top half of the second. Erin Lyons and MandyJones delivered back-to-back singles. Mandy Vinson singled, scoringLyons and advanced to second on the throw-in. Erica Wallace’ssacrifice fly scored Jones. Two batters later, Ginny Dunawayreached on an error, allowing Vinson to score. Devine Porterreached on a 3-base error that pushed Dunaway across homeplate.

The Lady Panthers added 2 runs in the fourth. Lindsey Marble andJulianna Wallace singled, respectively. Angela DeLaughter and Lyonshit back-to-back singles to score Marble and Wallace. Brookhavenseemed to have control of the game with a 6-0 lead.

Loyd star apparently had other ideas as the Lady Hornetsexploded for 7 runs in the bottom of the third. Nikki Hunsuckersingled. Two batters later, Beth Smith singled. Beck Smith walkedto load the bases. Dana Coke singled to score Hunsucker. HeatherBritt singled to score Beth Smith and Beck Smith. Whitney Hedgepethsingled to score Coke. Rusti Jackson’s single scored Britt with thetying run. Hunsucker, making her second plate appearance of theinning, singled to score Jackson; as Loyd Star took a 7-6advantage.

Brookhaven reclaimed the lead at 8-7 in their half of thefourth. Dunaway singled. Porter reached on a fielder’s choice.Kayla Allen reached on an error and allowed Porter to score. Marblereached on an error. Wallace’s sacrifice fly allowed Allen to scorethe go-ahead run.

Loyd Star tied the game at 8-8 in the bottom of the fourth. BethSmith singled. Beck Smith walked. Coke reached on a fielder’schoice. Hedgepeth’s single scored Beck Smith.

The Lady Hornets would take the lead for good in the fifth, at9-8. Ashton Williams singled and later scored on a single by BethSmith.

Loyd Star produced 2 insurance runs in their half of the sixth.Jackson singled. Leah Smith grounded into a fielder’s choice.William’s single scored Jackson and Hunsucker’s single scoredSmith.

Jamie Thompson was the winning pitcher. Thompson wasn’t 100percent during the game, but pitched well enough to win.

“Jamie has been bothered by migraine headaches,” said CoachBritt.

Vinson suffered the loss for Brookhaven (0-2).
