Saints use rush to whip BA Cougars

PRENTISS -The Prentiss Christian School Saints got physicalFriday night. Powered by running back Blake Bass, they rolled up381 yards rushing and beat the Brookhaven Academy Cougars 28-14 ina Class AA showdown of previously unbeaten teams.

Bass, a 165-pound senior, rushed 16 times for 230 yards and 2touchdowns. He scored on runs of 35 and 77 yards as the Saints rantheir record to 3-0.

Brookhaven Academy (2-1) resumes play Friday night, hostingColumbia Academy for a District 4-AA contest. Kickoff is 7:30.

“Prentiss is pretty salty,” said Brookhaven Academy coach DougClanton. “They were a better team than us Friday night. They have agood ball club.”

The Saints took a 13-0, first-quarter lead. Bass went 35 yardsfor a TD on the Saints’ second possession of the game. Adam Iovinokicked the PAT for a 7-0 lead.

Tight end Ryan Fortenberry caught a 10-yard pass fromquarterback Myles Speights for the second PCS touchdown.

Brookhaven quarterback Jake Sessums got the Cougars on thescoreboard with a 50-yard scamper. Jeffrey Waycaster ran the2-point conversion, making it 13-8.

Speights responded with a 5-yard scoring run. Austin Hamiltonran the 2-point conversion and the Saints led 21-0 at halftime.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Saints got a 77-yard TD runfrom Bass and led 28-8.

Tight end Adam Smith caught a 14-yard TD pass from Sessums toclose out the scoring.

Offensively, Sessums led the Cougars with 9 carries for 124yards. He completed 13 of 24 passes for 152 yards and wasintercepted twice.

Waycaster rushed 6 times for 57 yards. The Cougars were minussenior running back Dustin King who was sidelined by a sprainedknee.

Smith was Brookhaven’s leading receiver with 4 catches for 43yards. Grant Case caught 2 balls for 45 yards. Ben Davis had 3catches for 40 yards. Catching 2 passes for 12 yards were Ryan Nixand Waycaster. The Cougars dropped one touchdown pass.

On defense, Waycaster led the Cougars from hislinebacker position, making 12 tackles. Davis made 10 tackles. WillRushing and Chad Lagrone had 8 and 7 tacklesrespectively.

Sessums intercepted a pass on defense. Brandon Achordand Chase Magee recovered fumbles.
