Salem Wildcats speed past W. Lincoln Bears

SALEM – The speedy Salem Wildcats rolled up 462 yards of totaloffense to pick up their first win of the season, a 42-19 Division7-1A win over the West Lincoln Bears Friday night.

West Lincoln returns to action on Friday night, playing host tothe Dexter Bulldogs for homecoming. This divisional contest is setto begin at 7:30 p.m., at Perry Miller Field.

The Bears (2-4, 0-2) took a 7-6 lead after the opening 12minutes of play.

Salem (1-4, 1-0) scored 28 unanswered points to take a 34-7 leadheading into the final quarter. Chris Montgomery, Kentrell Smithand Rodney Bridges (2) scored touchdowns for the Wildcats.

The Bears scored with 10:40 left in the first quarter, on an11-yard run by fullback Stacey Fells. It capped an impressive withthe opening kickoff. Blake Howse kicked the extra point for a 7-0lead.

West Lincoln would scored again in the third quarter. With 4:43left in the third frame, Fells ran 33 yards for a TD. The PAT kickfailed.

In the fourth quarter, wide receiver Jeremy Branning caught a41-yard TD pass from quarterback Cody Mitchell. The Bears tried a2-ponit conversion but failed. They trailed 35-19.

Salem added a late touchdown by Jordan Hill.

Offensively, West Lincoln was led by Fells with 12rushes for 99 yards. Kalis Fells rushed 13 times for 62 yards plus4 receptions for 34 yards.

Branning caught 3 passes for 52 yards. Mitchellcompleted 11 of 22 passes for 133 yards and he was interceptedtwice.

West Lincoln finished with 8 first downs. The Bears lostone fumble.

On defense, Alan Skates led West Lincoln with 12tackles. Branning had 11 tackles and Clint Smith 10. Mario Blackhad a quarterback sack. Cody Hall, the team’s leading tackler,sustained an ankle injury during the first half.
