South Pike blanks Brook in JV game

Derrick Burton rushed for 77 yards and a touchdown, whilebackfield mate James Carter ran in another score as South Pikedefeated the Brookhaven Panthers 12-0 in junior varsity footballaction Monday night, at King Field.

Burton’s score came at the 4:28 mark of the second period. Hedove into the endzone from 1-yard out. The 2-point conversion tryfailed and the Eagles entertained a 6-0 lead.
Both teams played exceptional defense during the 4-quarter, 40minute affair, but it was Brookhaven’s inability to control theball that led to the South Pike scoring opportunities.
Carter capped off the scoring, in the final quarter, on a24-yard run with 2:38 left in the game. The 2-point conversion trywas stopped short of the goalline, with the Eagles clinging to a12-0 lead.
Brookhaven had one drive which moved inside of the South Pike20-yard line. Quarterback Josh Townsend, subbing for injuredstarter Maurice Parker, completed 3 passes to tight end BillyWilliams during the drive. Running back Kendell Nickelson providedsome spark on the ground. But a pass on fourth-and-three fellincomplete.
Williams had 3 receptions for 70 yards. Nickelson had 43 yardson 11 hard-nosed carries. Townsend was 3-for-7 for 70 yards with nointerceptions to lead the offensive charge.
Defensively, Tremell McArthur recovered afumble. Nickelson, Williams and Julius Lloyd registered sacks. JoeyQuarles and Daniel Walker were in on several tackles to pace thePanther defense.
