BA Cougars seek win at Porter’s Chapel

In other academy action, Copiah Academy is at Simpson County,Silliman Institute visits Parklane and Union Academy travels toWoodland Hills.

Brookhaven Academy, coached by Doug Clanton, improved to 1-1 inDistrict 4-AA play with a tough 37-35 victory over division foe OakForest last Friday at Amite, La. Overall, the Cougars stand5-2.

Porter’s Chapel (3-4, 0-3) fell to Tallulah, La. 34-6 lastFriday. The Eagles are out of the District 7-A.

Powering Brookhaven last Friday was senior quarterback JakeSessums who threw for four touchdowns and rushed for one TD.Sessums completed 17 of 26 passes for 257 yards and was interceptedtwice. He rushed 12 times for 56 yards.

Defensively, Jeffery Waycaster, Will Rushing and Dustin Kingsparked the Cougar defense with nine tackles apiece.

Copiah ended its 17-game losing streak last Friday witha 10-7 victory over Lamar School at Meridian. The Gallman-basedColonels, coached by David Gregory, improved to 1-1 District 4-AAAplay and are 1-6 on the season.

In the win over Lamar, Colonel quarterback ThomasGarland provided the one-man heroics with a one-yard touchdown run,a PAT kick and a 48-yard field goal. Overall, he rushed 10 timesfor 64 yards. Jonathan Bass led Copiah with 71 yards on 16carries.

Friday night, Copiah visits undefeated Simpson County inMendenhall. The AA Cougars are 7-0 on the season and 3-0 in thedistrict. Simpson is coming off a 21-12 win over District 3 foeEast Rankin.

Last year, Simpson whipped Copiah 43-15.

Parklane pounded District 2-AAAA rival Madison-Ridgeland36-8 last Friday and now prepares to entertain AAA foe SillimanInstitute. The McComb-based Pioneers (5-1, 1-1) are coached byCharlie Newlon.

Silliman (6-1, 1-0) is coming off a 52-14 victory overDistrict 4-AAA foe Adams Christian.

Last season, Parklane crushed Silliman48-26.

Union was handed a 20-13 loss at the hands of NewtonCounty Academy. This Friday, the Georgetown-based Saints visitWoodland Hills. Union (3-4, 2-1) is coached by RandySumrall.

Woodland Hills’ (5-1, 2-0) game with UniversityChristian was postponed last week by the Mississippi Private SchoolAssociation.
