Error helps Aberdeen defeat Lawrence Co.

BRANDON – Lawrence County’s Lady Cougars and Aberdeen’s LadyBulldogs got an early wake-up call Saturday morning, as the twoteams met in a Final Four Class 4A loser’s bracket game at ShilohPark.

BRANDON – Lawrence County’s Lady Cougars and Aberdeen’s LadyBulldogs got an early wake-up call Saturday morning, as the twoteams met in a Final Four Class 4A loser’s bracket game at ShilohPark. The winner would stay alive in the double-eliminationsoftball tournament, while the loser would end its season.

A fielding error by Lawrence County, in the bottom of theseventh inning, allowed Aberdeen to score the winning run. The LadyBulldogs claimed a 6-5 victory over the Lady Cougars.

The Lady Bulldogs were 25-7 losers to New Hope, while the LadyCougars had a 17-8 setback to Petal on Friday night.

Lawrence County, the Division 6-4A champion, closed anoutstanding season at 22-8; finishing fourth in the Class 4A stateslowpitch softball tournament.

Aberdeen played the loser of New Hope/Petal at 1:30 p.m.,Saturday afternoon.

“We could have hit the ball better,” said Lady Cougar head coachPatsy Sandifer following the game.

Lawrence County opened the scoring in the top half of the first.Jerrica Boutwell reached on a 2-base error. Casey Ward tripled toscore Boutwell. Amanda Givens grounded out to the Lady Bulldogs’shortstop, but Ward scored to give the Lady Cougars an early 2-0lead.

Aberdeen (29-13) would gain a 2-2 deadlock in their half of thefirst. Crystal Bender reached on an error. Maryleigh Tisdalesingled and moved to second on a throwing error. That error allowedBender to score. Two batters later, Vicky Loggan doubled to scoreTisdale.

The Lady Bulldogs claimed their first lead of the game in thethird. Bender singled and advanced to second on a fielding error byLawrence County. Mona McAllister singled to score Bender andAberdeen had a 3-2 lead.

Lawrence County scored 3 times in the top of the sixth to gain a5-3 lead. Boutwell singled. Robbi Dampier singled to move Boutwellto second. Ward reached on an error to load the bases. Givenssingled to score Boutwell and Dampier.

Aberdeen would pull even at 5-5 in their half of the sixth.Loggan singled. April Reese tripled to score Loggan. Serina Johnsonsingled to score Reese.

It appeared that this game was headed for extra innings, but ainopportune error by Lawrence County ended the season.

Lady Bulldog Ashley Smith singled. Shuana Little walked, movingSmith to second. Bender singled to left field. The throw to homewas in time, but the ball was dropped; allowing Smith to slide homesafely.

“I thought that we had the throw,” added Sandifer.
