Bowling Green routs BA Cougars

FRANKLINTON, La. – The Brookhaven Academy Cougars saw theirquest for a berth in the Class AA state playoffs come to a haltFriday night. The District 4-AA champion Bowling Green Buccaneersposted an impressive 50-26 victory, rolling up 419 rushingyards.

Brookhaven Academy, coached by Doug Clanton, ends its seasonwith a 6-5 overall record and a 2-2 worksheet in district play.Bowling Green, the district champ, improved to 7-3 overall and 4-0in district play.

“Bowling Green was too much for us,” said Clanton. “We couldn’tdo anything with them. They come out of a Power-I or straight T andrun run right at you.”

Bowling Green will host Prentiss Christian in the opening roundof the playoffs.

A four-yard run by Evan Smith gave Bowling Green a brief 6-0lead early in the first quarter.

Brookhaven came back to take a 7-6 lead on a two-yard run by BenDavis followed by an extra point kick by Brandon Achord.

Before the end of the first quarter, the Buccaneers scored againon a one-yard burst by Smith and failed on their second attempt ata two-point conversion to lead the Cougars 12-6.

In the second quarter, Bowling Green picked up a safety andscored on a 13 yard run by Benji Pettiette. Derrick King kicked thePAT and Bowling Green increased its lead to 21-7 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Buccaneers scored 29 points andBrookhaven answered with 13 points to cut the deficit to 50-20.Cougar quarterback Jake Sessums scored one touchdown on a one-yardrun and Davis returned a kickoff 75 yards for the second TD.Achord’s PAT kick was good but the two-point try failed.

The Cougars scored another touchdown in the fourth quarter whenDavis connected to Dustin King for six points.

The leading rusher for the Cougars was King with eight runs for34 yards. Davis carried four times for 31 yards.

In the air, King caught three passes for 72 yards. Making threecatches for 57 yards was Davis. Sessums completed 10 of 15 passesfor 190 yards.

Defensively, Davis led Brookhaven with 11 tackles.Making nine stops apiece were Jonathon Watts and Ryan Nix.Recovering a fumble apiece were Jeffrey Waycaster, Erick Terry andWatts.
