Wesson Cobras edge Mt. Olive

WESSON -A 20-point performance by Richie Miller powered theWesson Cobras to a 50-46 Tuesday night victory over the Mt. OlivePirates in the season opener.

In the varsity girls game, Mt. Olive edged Wesson 38-34, led byAshley Gray’s 20 points.

Wesson hosts West Lincoln next Tuesday.

The Cobras (1-0) were led on the backboards by Roderick Claywith 13 points and 8 rebounds. Miller had 6 rebounds. Lorenzo Easongrabbed 4 rebounds. Billy Ray Miller made 3 steals.

“Both teams struggled offensively starting out,” said Wessonboys coach Jimmie Nail. “We need to shoot better from the freethrow line,” after watching his Cobras make 8 of 17 freethrows.

“We only had one day of practice with all of our players beforeour first game,” said Nail. Wesson concluded its football seasonlast Friday night.

The Lady Cobras (0-1) , coached by Lane Young, nearly overcame30 turnovers to beat Mt. Olive. They led the Lady Pirates 18-17 athalftime.

Kail Baldwin led Wesson with 8 points and 9 rebounds. ChannelleMcCrory added 8 points and 5 rebounds. Maggie Johnson and CaronBrister had 6 boards apiece.

In the JV boys game, Wesson posted a 34-32 win, led by NickSmith’s 16 points.
