Teenager killed in Lawrence Co. mishap

MONTICELLO — A New Hebron teenager was killed Friday around7:30 a.m. in a head-on collision on Highway 84 near the Armintersection, authorities said.

Christinna Sibley, 16, was killed when her Blazer was hit headon by a dump truck driven by Claude Davis, according to MississippiHighway Patrol Trooper Bryan Phillips.

According to Phillips, Sibley, a student at Lawrence County HighSchool, was traveling westbound to the school and dodged into theeastbound lane to avoid a deer. Davis was unable to stop the fullyloaded truck or avoid Sibley and struck the Blazer.

The Blazer caught fire and the Jaws of Life were used to removethe victim, according to Robert Patterson, assistant fire chiefwith the Monticello Fire Department.

Davis was not injured, Phillips said.

Dr. L.C. Firle, principal of LCHS, said Sibley’s death wastragic and she will be missed.

“We’re just sorry that it happened,” Firle said. “Our prayers goout to the family and the whole community. All we can say is Goddoesn’t make mistakes. She was a sweet child and we’re going tomiss her. The school’s in shock.”

The accident caused a lengthy delay in highway traffic. Vehicleswere backed up on the highway for approximately a mile while thewreckage was removed and began moving again around 11 a.m.
