Dales, Barfield lead Co-Lin

DECATUR – Tiffany Dales provided the spark and ignited theCo-Lin Lady Wolves to an 81-58 Monday night triumph over the EastCentral Community College women. Dales, a sophomore forward fromAlexandria, La., scored 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as theLady Wolves remained undefeated in 12 games.

In the men’s game, Co-Lin completed the South Division sweep bytaking the Warriors 71-61, directed by freshman Brannon Barfield’s15 points and 12 rebounds. Guard Rod Haynes chipped in 14points.

Co-Lin resumes play Thursday night, hosting Hinds CommunityCollege for a South Division doubleheader. The women’s game tipsoff at 6 p.m., in Mullen Gymnasium.

The Lady Wolves (12-0, 2-0), ranked No. 6 in the NJCAA poll, gota strong performance from Dales as she made 8 of 11 field goalattempts and 10 of 12 free throws. Their outside attack was led bysophomore Denise Catchings of Hazlehurst, sacking 15 points.

“In the first half our guards did a good job of containing theirguards,” said Co-Lin women’s coach Gwyn Young. “Our post people dida good job of fronting with help from other players.

“We struggled at times scoring but we hit enough shots outsideto open up the inside,” Young continued. “We got some timelybaskets from Denise Catchings.”

Co-Lin made 24 of 33 free throws to turn back East Central’scomeback. The Lady Wolves only committed 6 turnovers.

The Wolves (10-2, 1-1) held a shaky 35-32 halftime lead overEast Central. Co-Lin men’s coach Dennis Sims said, “We didn’t makegood decisions on offense in the first 30 minutes of the game. Ourexecution during the last 10 minutes improved and we were able tomake some open jumpers and layups.”

Co-Lin outrebounded the Warriors 45-34. Barfield, a 6-5 freshmanfrom Lake Charles, La., directed the boardwork. Quentin Christian,a 6-8 freshman from Mendenhall, had 7 rebounds and 10 points.

Sophomore guards Brandon Dickerson and Barry Whitley each had 11points for Co-Lin. Whitley made 6 assists and 4 steals. Haynes had5 steals.
