Brookhaven Academy roars past Bucs in district action

It was business as usual for Brookhaven Academy Tuesday night asthe Cougars swept a pair of District 4-AA games from Bowling Green(La.) to finish unbeaten in district play.

The Lady Cougars rolled to an easy 62-37 win over the Lady Bucswhile the host Cougars downed Bowling Green 72-38.

Brookhaven Academy 62, Bowling Green 37

Amy Smith scored 14 of her game-high 19 points in the firstquarter as the Lady Cougars jumped out to a 28-11 lead. Smith, whofinished with five 3-point shots, bucketed four of them during thatfirst quarter run as Brookhaven Academy improved to 30-1 overall,8-0 in District 4-AA. She also dished out six assists and had foursteals.

“We’ve gone three straight years without losing a conferencegame with this bunch of seniors,” said Lady Cougar head coach BarryGray. “Those six seniors have lost a total of five games since theseventh grade. That’s impressive.”

Center Lindsay Altman was the other Lady Cougar in doublefigures with 14 points and eight rebounds.

Katie Thomas and Jamie Cody led Bowling Green with 17 and 14points respectively.

Lindsey Phillips and Anna K. Gatlin each had three assists andKatie Newman had four steals for Brookhaven Academy.

Brookhaven Academy 72, Bowling Green 38

The Cougars broke open a close game with a 10-1 run at the endof the second quarter to take a 31-21 halftime lead. They kept upthat pace with a 26-10 third quarter burst en route to the win.

“I was very pleased with our play tonight,” said Cougar head manDale Watts. “We had three players (Paul Coker, Chad Lagrone andCraig Smith) out with the flu, and Bowling Green was right behindus in our district. We had to go with a smaller lineup and I wasworried about that but they stepped up and the others fell right onin.”

Jake Sessums and Turner Havard scored 22 and 21 points forBrookhaven Academy (22-5, 8-0). Sessums also added two 3-pointerswhile Havard dominated the boards with 12 rebounds.

Jim Magruder and Johnathon Morgan each scored eight points forthe Buccaneers.

Ben Davis scored 14 points, grabbed four rebounds, dished outfour assists and had five steals for the Cougars.

Brookhaven Academy returns to action Friday night with a trip toGallman to take on Copiah Academy. They close out the regularseason Saturday night as they host Hillcrest Christian for SeniorNight.
