Loyd Star girls, Enterprise boys capture victories

The visiting Enterprise Lady Jackets nailed six 3-pointers inthe first half but failed to keep the treys going as the Loyd StarLady Hornets battled back in the second half to secure a 57-50 winFriday night.

In the boys game, the Enterprise boys hit the boards hard earlyto take a tough 75-61 victory over Loyd Star.

Enterprise hosts Wesson Tuesday night.

Loyd Star 57, Enterprise 50

In the girls game, Enterprise junior forward LaceyPalomarez led the three-pointer shooters with three in the firsthalf to lead Loyd Star 15-12 at the end of the first quarter and31-28 at halftime. Also hitting treys for Enterprise were AndreaHarthorne, Daisy Sanders and Roberta Johnson.

“Enterprise hit six three’s in the first half,” saidLoyd Star girls coach Lori Britt following the win. “We struggled.We got more aggressive on the press and less tentative onoffense.”

The Lady Hornets (18-5, 8-1) exploded for a 19-9 run onthe Lady Jackets in the third quarter to take a 47-40 lead goinginto the final frame. Loyd Star senior center Christy May openedthe final frame with a three-pointer to put the hosts lead at10-points, 50-40. Both teams scored 10 points apiece in the fourthquarter.

“I’m proud of the way we fought back after their (LoydStar’s) run,” said Enterprise girls coach Billy Vaughn of the thirdquarter play. “We made it through it.”

May led the Lady Hornets with 17 points (13 points inthe second half) and 15 rebounds. Beck Smith fired in 13 points andgrabbed six rebounds. Collecting 11 rebounds, five steals, fiveassists and a block shot was Monica Townsend.

The Lady Jackets (13-7) got 17 points, 8 rebound, 6steals sand 4 assists from Palomarez. Roberta Johnson netted 16points and 5 rebounds. Daisy Sanders had 5 boards. Andrea Harthornehad 3 assists.

Enterprise 75, Loyd Star 61

The Enterprise boys (??-??) set the tempo of the game inthe opening moments with a slam dunk by guard Rufus Allen. TheJackets outscored the Hornets 25-12 to take the lead going into thesecond quarter. With 16.7 second left, Loyd Star boys coach Gene”Moochie” Britt was assessed a technical foul and Allen went1-for-2 from the charity line.

Loyd Star battled back to outscore Enterprise 21-18 butremained 10 points, 43-33 at halftime.

“The boys played probably their best game of the year,”said Coach Vaughn of his team after the win.

The Jackets went into the fourth quarter with an11-point, 57-46, edge on the Hornets. Loyd Star made a run andpulled within five points, 61-56 following a Seth Britt jumper.Hornet Tyrone Tyler picked up his fifth foul and received atechnical foul before leaving the floor. Enterprise was 2-of-4 fromthe charity line and pushed their lead back to seven points, 63-56with 2:31 left to play. Allen followed up with a jumper and a freethrow to give the Jackets a 65-56 advantage with 1:51 left on theclock.

“We didn’t play very good tonight,” said Loyd Star boyscoach Gene “Moochie” Britt. “We weren’t ready to play tonight.Every time we would get close, we let them get ahead. Theyoutrebounded and outshot us.”

Senior guard Demarcus Barnes pumped in 24 points, had 11rebounds and made three steals for the Hornets (9-13, 5-5). BradBritt scored 12 points. Jermaine Hunter scored 11 points and pulleddown 10 rebounds.

“That’s probably the best overall game we’ve played allyear,” said Coach Vaughn. “We had some good spurts.”

Powering Enterprise (9-9) with 20 points, including 10of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter, was Allen. ShermaineVaughn picked up 15 rebounds,10 points, 5 assists, 2 steals and 2blocked shots. Pierre Harthorne followed with 14 points and 8rebounds. Rufus Allen, R.C. Johnson and Kary Brown had 6 reboundsapiece. Brown finished with 10 points and 4 assists.

In the junior high boys game, Loyd Star dumpedEnterprise 55-26. Sidney Chester led Loyd Star with 13 points. JodyBritt followed with 11 points and Jessie Sones finished with 10points.

Chris Porter led Enterprise with 15 points.

Loyd Star entertains North Pike Tuesday for two games.The girls game begins at 5 p.m.
