20-0 Lady Wolves overwhelm Hinds

UTICA – The Co-Lin Lady Wolves held Hinds scoreless for thefirst 10 minutes of Monday night’s South Division matchup. The endresult was a 76-64 win over the Lady Bulldogs at J.D. BoydGymnasium on the Utica campus of Hinds Community College.

Co-Lin raised its record to 20-0 overall and 9-0 in the SouthDivision. Hinds dropped to 2-19 and 0-9.

Co-Lin is ranked No. 6 in the latest NJCAA poll. The Lady Wolveswill host Pearl River on Thursday with tipoff set for 6 p.m.

It appeared that the Lady Wolves were going to pitch a shutoutduring the first 10 minutes of the game. Tiffany Dales, a 5-9sophomore from Alexandria, La., tossed in six points during theopening minutes. Her quickness was a key point in this earlyscoring spurt.

Hinds could not find the range. Uncontested layups, wide openjumpers and even free throws would not fall for the LadyBulldogs.

Teresa Ball, a 5-5 sophomore from Jackson, put Hinds on thescoreboard at the 10-minute mark with a short jumper from the rightwing. That cut the Co-Lin lead to 15-2.

Because of its height advantage, Co-Lin went to the inside game.Mindy Livaudais, a 6-foot freshman from Chalmette, La., cashed inback-to-back offensive rebounds to increase Co-Lin’s lead to 24-4.Livaudais scored eight points in the first half off offensiveputbacks.

The Lady Wolves held a comfortable 31-12 lead atintermission.

The start of the second half saw Dales and Livaudais combine for10 points to propel Co-Lin to a 41-19 lead. Livaudais finished witha team-high 20 points. Dales added 17.

A basket by Sheritha Simmons gave Co-Lin a 66-24 lead with lessthan six minutes remaining in the contest.

Hinds eventually cut the lead to 12, thanks to a late 14-2 spurtwith two minutes remaining. Ball tossed in 11 of her 21 pointsduring that stretch, including three treys, and went 4-of-4 fromthe field. Raven McLin added a 3-point basket as Hinds made itinteresting at the end.

Co-Lin held off the late rally by the Lady Bulldogs by going tothe charity stripe. Simmons and Melanie Fairchild combined for fivefree throws in the final 1:55 to secure the victory.

“It surely wasn’t pretty out there tonight,” said Lady Wolvescoach Gwyn Young. “We were not focused as we needed to be.”

Livaudais led Co-Lin with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Simmonsscored 17 points. Christy Brown had 12 points and 9 rebounds.

Reed scored a game-high 25 points, with 18 coming in the secondhalf.
