BA’s Lady Cougars nip Prep in overtime

CLINTON – Senior playmaker Katie Newman made six straight freethrows in overtime and the Brookhaven Academy Lady Cougars clippedJackson Prep 63-51 Monday night in the opening round of theMississippi Private School Association’s Overall Tournament. TheLady Cougars made 12 straight free throws in the last 1:45 of thegame and avenged an early season loss at Jackson Prep.
Brookhaven Academy (40-2) resumes play Wednesday in A.E. WoodColiseum on the Mississippi College campus. The Lady Cougars playDelta, the Class A State Tournament champion, at 5 p.m.
Newman, one of six seniors on the squad, made 9 of 10 freethrows in the game and finished with 15 points. Center LindsayAltman sacked 16 points and 14 rebounds.
Senior forward Lindsey Phillips chipped in 14 points and 9rebounds.
Prep (31-7), the Class AAAA third place team, battled Brookhavento a 47-47 deadlock at the end of regulation. The Lady Patriots hadled 23-18 at halftime.
Mary Catherine Sharpe led Prep with 15 points and 13 rebounds.Sharpe and teammate Tara Chez Britton, who finished with 10 points,fouled out of the game.
