Loyd Star Hornets silence Wesson in 9-1 triumph

Seth Britt struck out 11 batters Monday night and the Loyd StarHornets romped to a 9-1 victory over visiting Wesson. Britt (4-1),a junior right hander, did not issue a base on balls and limitedthe Cobras to four hits in the division contest.

Loyd Star improved its record 12-8 overall and 5-1 in Division6-2A play. The Hornets play at St. Andrew’s Friday, starting with aJV game at 4:30. Loyd Star hosts Bassfield Saturday at 11 a.m. and1 p.m.

Wesson (3-11, 1-5) resumes play Friday at Natchez Cathedral.

At the plate, the Hornets were powered by right fielder AdamSpeeg who hit a solo homer in the fifth and went 3-for-4. Providingdoubles were catcher Chase Coley, second baseman Jody Britt andthird baseman Blake Wall. Center fielder Brad Britt, Seth Britt andWall had 2 hits apiece. Cass Brister singled.

The Hornets exploded for 5 runs in the second inning as Coley,Wall and Seth Britt doubled.

The Cobras got doubles from Langham and Chris Peets, and singlesfrom Tyler Broome and Peyton Warren.

Brian Reason was the losing pitcher. He was relieved by JosephLangham in the fourth.

“We’re a young team this year,” said Wesson first year headcoach Jerry Brewer. “I thought Brian (Reason) did a pretty good jobfor us despite the score. He’s only an eighth grader and Loyd Starhad some timely hits against him.

“Our team is made up of mostly seventh and eighth graders andwe’re going to take our share of lumps.” Brwer continued. “However,I am optimistic about the future.”

In the JV game, Loyd Star defeated Wesson 3-2. Blake Porterprovided a 2-run single for the Hornets (6-3) in the bottom of thefourth. Matthew Delaughter chipped in 2 hits as Jody Britt pitchedthe win. Wesson fell to 8-2.
