Co-Lin Wolves sweep Southwest

WESSON – After a shaky 11-7 victory in the opener, the Co-LinWolves became more focused and smashed Southwest 11-1 in Tuesday’snightcap, behind the 2-hit pitching of Derek Atkins.

Co-Lin, coached by Keith Case, improved its record to 23-13overall and 10-6 in the South Division. Southwest, coached by LarryHolmes, fell to 4-24 and 2-14 in the South.

The Wolves resume play Friday, hosting Jones County JuniorCollege for a South Division twinbill which should settle thesecond place deadlock in the South. The first game starts at 1p.m.

Jones (23-16, 10-6) split with Hinds yesterday, winning 3-2 butlosing 7-1.

Jacob Hartwig was the winning pitcher in relief of starterChuckie Stracener. Doug Atkins retired the final 2 batters of thegame to preserve the win.

Hartwig (2-0) struck out 2 batters, walked 1, and gave up 4hits.

The Wolves took a 4-3 lead in the fourth, erupting for 3runs as Brandon Holleman hit a solo homer. Matt Lea provided an RBIfor the Wolves and so did Arlandus Brown.

The Wolves got doubles from Brown, Britt Hederman, MattLea and Brett Duncan. Each of them finished with 2hits.

Southwest first baseman Bryant Kogel hit a solo homer inthe third frame. The Bears got a double from Leslie Giddens. Theygot 2 hits from Dustin Wilkinson, Dustin Hano and RichardSlaccolio.

Josh Hailey started on the mound for Southwest and wasrelieved in the sixth.

Freshman Derek Atkins shut down the Bears with a2-hitter. He struck out none, walked 3 and gave up an unearned runin the sixth.,

Andy Lange was the loser. He gave up 11 runs on 12 hits,striking out 6 and walking 2 and hitting 2 batters.

A double by Kogel and a single by Dougie Lagreueaccounted for Southwest’s hits.

Leftfielder Brandon Atkins hit a 2-run homer in Co-Lin’s6-run, second-inning. Arlandus Brown hit a sacrifice fly in therally and finished with 2 hits, including a double.

Matt Lea, Britt Hederman and Brett Duncan doubled forCo-Lin. Holleman and Duncan also had 2 hits.
